I’ve just finished a re-read of a Canticle for Leibowitz, described as a very Catholic book. I enjoyed it enough to read it twice in 18 months.
One of the main plot points is the canonisation of the titular Leibowitz. He’s been dead for a few centuries by this point, and no spoilers intended, he is eventually declared a saint by the pope by special revelation.
Now, I have a question. Has Leibowitz been sitting around heaven doing saintly things unnoticed and broadly unrecognised? I assume as a Saint, he’s above being concerned with being unappreciated for his work. Or was Leibowitz bumbing around heaven and generally doing people-what-got-to-heaven things those people do, when one day he suddenly finds himself promoted and now responsible for curing the sick and looking after scribes and whatnot.
How does it work?
